Abstract
The object of this study is to trace the social history of the professional group of 'elementary school teachers'
from the beginning of the profession to the present day. Its
focus is on the teachers themselves, on the ways in which they
were recruited and trained, their conditions of employment,
their position in the social structure, their professional
associations and their group activities.
